Dr Ed Munn has recently
retired from a career as
research biologist. As part of
his work he has studied cells
and bio-molecules by means of
electron microscopy. He has
developed the technique he
calls OneLinerImages as a
means to convey to the
non-specialist some feeling
for the internal beauty of
cells revealed in the course
of his studies . These hand
drawn and coloured images
consist of a continuous single
line which defines the outline
of the animal or plant
depicted and represents the
layer that characterises the
surface of the cells of which
living organisms are composed;
the line is regularly indented
to represent the intricate and
complex internal structure of
living cells and also their
interaction with the
environment. Thus the whole
animal or plant is visible
together with its normally
concealed internal workings.
