Irene Stocks was born in
Lancashire. She studied Fine
Art in the 1960s at Leeds
University under Professor
Quentin Bell. After careers in
teaching and town planning she
moved to Norfolk in 1980, then
spent over 20 years in the art
business, specialising in
Modern British Art. At the
same time she continued to
paint, exhibiting mainly in
galleries in East Anglia. She
has also undertaken a number
of mural commissions.
She paints almost
exclusively in acrylics on
paper or board. Her highly
decorative work is
characterised by strong colour
and composition, her subject
matter including still life,
the human figure and animals,
treated in a very stylised
manner, as well as purely
abstract compositions.
