The Corn Poppy (Papaver rhoeas): This poppy grows wild in the countryside. Usually in heavily disturbed ground such as corn fields, roadsides and verges. Growing to a height of between one and two feet and with it?s bowed overlapping petals, this plant has come to symbolize the fallen dead of the World Wars. Hybrids have been raised in various colours but it is this classic version that gives the summer countryside it?s stunning carpet of red.
